Outpatient Pharmacist at Reem Hospital in Abu Dhabi Emirate, United Arab Emirates
Basic Purpose of the role
The Outpatient Pharmacist is responsible for ensuring the safe, accurate, and efficient dispensing of medications while providing exceptional customer service to patients. This role demands expertise in outpatient pharmacy operations, a strong understanding of insurance processes in Abu Dhabi, and the ability to manage high prescription volumes. The pharmacist must maintain strict compliance with regulatory standards and demonstrate resilience, compassion, and adaptability in a dynamic healthcare environment.
Key responsibilities of the role
- Dispense a high volume of medications daily (minimum 80 prescriptions), ensuring zero errors.
- Dispense controlled medicines and biologics in compliance with DoH and regulatory guidelines.
- Provide high-quality counseling to patients on medication use, potential side effects, and storage instructions.
- Handle patient inquiries and complaints effectively, including resolving concerns from angry patients or family members in a compassionate and professional manner.
- Collaborate with insurance companies, ensuring medication approvals and resolving queries promptly.
- Maintain detailed knowledge of Abu Dhabi insurance policies, including coverage specifics across major insurance providers.
- Ensure compliance with documentation requirements for controlled substances and biologics, including accurate entry into TrakCare or equivalent EMR systems.
- Work in a team-oriented environment, supporting colleagues and fostering a collaborative team spirit.
- Share innovative ideas to improve pharmacy workflows and enhance service quality.
- Contribute to the training and mentoring of junior staff when required.
- Work across shifts (morning, evening, night, and twilight) as required by the hospital schedule.
- Maintain stock and inventory management of medications, including controlled medicines and biologics.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance pharmacy services.
- Adhere to DoH regulations, hospital policies, and international best practices for medication safety and handling.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information in compliance with data protection laws.
Other responsibilities
- Participates in quality management activities as assigned and at a personal level of accountability, i.e. accreditation process.
- Evaluates factors related to safety, outcomes, effectiveness, cost, and social impact when developing and implementing practice innovations.
- Participate in the Hospital’s Quality and Audit Programmes and evaluate the impact of new practices.
- Actively participates with the Pharmacist and Senior Pharmacist in staff development activities consistent with service delivery and individual learning goals.
- Maintains a primary role in departmental and interdepartmental related educational activities.
- Maintains a significant role in the creation and execution of Hospital programs, hospital quality development, policy and procedures and competencies.
- Actively participates in the Clinical Competency Programme.
Compliance guidelines
Participates in the formulation of Quality Assurance programs in line with strategic direction.
Participates on relevant committees and on special projects as required.
Maintains confidentiality regarding patient/staff information.
Ensures all allied health staff maintains confidentiality regarding patient/staff information.
Functions as a clinical resource to all Staff and acts as liaison with other disciplines and departments.
Promotes positive public relations with patients, peers, medical staff and members of the general public.
Collaborates with personnel from non-clinical department/disciplines regarding issues that may negatively impact patient care; facilitate solutions as needed.
Maintain a positive work environment for staff and promote team efforts, promote and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of staff.
Adheres to the policies of Occupational Health and Safety and Infection Control Guidelines in all work practices.
The position does have heavy exposure to malodorous, infectious body fluids from patients and some minimal exposure to noxious smells from cleansing agents.
The position requires high exposure to infectious wastes such as blood and body fluids that mandate the wearing of gloves, masks and goggles for every actual or potential exposure.

Qualifications, Certifications and Experience
- Education
Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy (BPharm) or equivalent.
Master’s degree in Pharmacy or further specialization in a related field is preferred but not mandatory.
- Licensure
Valid DoH Pharmacist License to practice in Abu Dhabi.
- Experience
- Minimum 1 year of experience in an outpatient pharmacy setting within a hospital or multi-specialty medical center in Abu Dhabi.
- Proven track record of dispensing 80+ prescriptions per day.
- Experience with controlled medicines, biologics, and EMR systems such as TrakCare.
- Extensive knowledge of Abu Dhabi insurance companies and their medication-related policies.
Physical requirements
The position requires a considerable amount of physical work. The individual must be able to quickly manoeuvre throughout halls, stairways and patient rooms in response to hospital emergencies. The following denote the key physical requirements for the job which may require: Standing, Simple Grasping, Fine Manipulation, Operation Machinery / Equipment, Lifting / overhead reaching, Twisting, Climbing / Balancing, Crouching / Squatting and Reaching.
In addition the position requires office work involving extensive use of the computer and interdepartmental coordination. Typical physical demands include: a high degree of manual dexterity to sufficiently perform computer functions on a keyboard, produce materials on a PC and operate basic office equipment, normal or corrected vision and hearing, extensive sitting and walking, mobility sufficient to visit with departments or employees throughout the facility and lift up to 13 kgs.
